Warning Signs of an Engine Problem We Can Fix at Our Olathe, KS Auto Shop
It's always best to get to the shop when you first suspect that engine trouble is brewing. By acting quickly, it's more likely that the problem can be resolved before it worsens to the point that you need very expensive repairs, or perhaps even engine replacement. At Smith Specialty Automotive, our local mechanics are highly experienced with accurately identifying engine issues, and then flawlessly fixing them.
The Check Engine Light Flashes On
If your check engine light turns on, it's not automatically a sign that engine failure is imminent. But you should still visit the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any developing issues can be taken care of before they escalate. Common reasons the check engine light illuminates are problems with MAF sensors, oxygen sensors, and catalytic converters. But even a loose gas cap can potentially trigger the light.
Common Indications of Engine Trouble
If you hear abnormal noises coming from your engine, you'll definitely want to figure out what's causing them. Of particular concern are knocking and tapping sounds, which could be caused by such issues as inadequate lubrication, bad rod bearings, and a lean air/fuel mixture. Squealing sounds are symptomatic of a serpentine belt problem. Grinding noises could indicate a broken water pump or power steering pump.
Another serious sign of trouble is power loss. If you drive an old car with a ton of miles, then it's not automatically a red flag if a little power has been slowly lost over time. But a sudden loss of a substantial amount of power could indicate a piston or head gasket problem, or another significant issue.
You'll also want to get to the shop if your car is producing discolored/excessive exhaust smoke. White smoke suggests that coolant is leaking internally, and could mean you have a blown head gasket. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is burning up. Blue-tinted smoke is a symptom of an oil leak.
